Once the capital of the Lydian Empire, the Ancient City of Sardis had a central and important location, connecting Anatolia to the Aegean coast. Not only was Sardis the capital of an empire that ruled the entire Western Anatolia, it was also the place where the first coin in the world was minted. Today, you can explore the monumental gymnasium structure, and the largest synagogue of the ancient world. The nearby Lydian tumulus cemetery called Bin Tepe is among the largest tumuli in the world, rivaling the pyramids of Giza in size.
