Monty Don's Italian Gardens is a four-part BBC documentary presented by Monty Don, following Monty Don's grand garden tour around Italy, from the retreats of the affluent north to the horticultural gems of the south. Monty Don begins his journey in Rome, power base of emperors and popes, to explore some of the most extravagant gardens ever created. In Florence Monty Don discovers how renaissance gardens were created as works of art, and how a group of Edwardian expats mistakenly reinforced the idea that formal Italian gardens were flowerless. In Naples Monty Don visits some of the most sublime, romantic retreats in southern Italy. He attempts to discover why, in the south, gardens are informal and filled with flowers. Finally, Monty Don concludes his garden tour of Italy in the wealthy north where, in the Veneto and Lucca, extravagant pleasure gardens were created for flirtation and fun.

i love monty don. His book "complete gardener" changed my life. Weird to think a gardening book can change someone's life, but it did

What a wonderful documentary, Monty definitely has a knack for presenting programmes. He is articulate, clever and amusing. What a shame that the other three parts are not available in HD like this one!

i think that the first time i watched this, i must have been 14 or 15 years old...? whatever the case, i'm 26 now - and i've watched it again, time after time after time, and been blessed enough to visit Italy and Rome in particular a few times now... whenever i am at my lowest points, i come back to this documentary. There's something so magical about it.
Thank you for uploading this. I hope it will stay up for years to come. By then I'm sure i'll have put it on discs and usb drives and so on just to make sure it stays with me forever.
I grew to this humble wee documentary, and it's such a joy to come back to when i need it most ❤

Monty does an excellent presentation of the garden documentary, he has a charming personality and a very interesting voice. Monty is a natural for the television screen plus learning about garden along with history is very nice.

Wish we could have seen the gardens vs Monty most of the time. Showing the gardens with background commentary would have been preferred. I thought this was a garden tour vs a history (which some of which is incorrect) lesson. I love history, but this was posted as a garden tour of amazing Italian gardens.
