Scrub your Metadata with THESE Tools

Did you know that when you share a photo online, you might be revealing the exact location of your home? Or that when you print a document, there are hidden dots on the page that reveal the exact printer the document came from?

Metadata is data about data. It's attached to EVERY digital artifact, and when you share a digital file, you're probably revealing a lot more information than intended.

How do you find this metadata and erase it? We'll teach you in this video.

00:00 - Intro
01:26 - What is Metadata?
02:29 - Why is this important?
04:28 - How to Find Metadata
04:49 - How to Scrub Metadata (Easy)
06:55 - How to Scrub Metadata (Deep Dive)
07:47 - Other Digital Artifacts

Huge THANK YOU to David Huerta and the Freedom of the Press Foundation for their insight!

You can read more about metadata from their training guides:

I have a bunch of comments showing up in my notifications but they never appear in the actual comments section. Anyone know what the issue might be, and whether these comments are being automatically deleted by YT?

Not only is she highly knowledgeable but she does it in a super engaging way because of her awesome personality and her great sense of style. Usually these type of videos are so boring I can barely make it through them. But this woman really knows her stuff and how to present it in a way that you watch every video to the very end and recommend her to all your friends.

Yeah... back in my days in the corporate world, I used to have fun with MS Office metadata, especially when controversies arose regarding authorship or revisions. "I wrote that myself!" "Oh, no you didn't! This document -- and the spreadsheet -- came from another company and was written by someone called Jane Shmoe!" "How do you know?" "Let's look at the metadata." "Ahhhh... ya got me...."

Lovely video (all aspects)! 😍

thanks for the nice reminder here Naomi, it's a topic that bears repeating. what it brought to my mind is those pesky printer dots. the other metadata is easily seen and scrubbed. those dots though might persist even when you photograph a document before forwarding. this may be a subject for another vid that talks about how to find the dots, read what they mean, and ways to for sure remove them. maybe ways to hack a printer would be good to know. I really hate it when my printer is using my ink to pollute my images/paper to communicate with just about anyone without my permission 😕
cheers to you as always 😘

Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi outside the home. Stop using public networks - unless it’s essential.

8:02 The movie CONTACT brilliantly leveraged this, with images AND layered audio interlaced within the images received by the SETI crew!

Nice video but you missed one of the most important and easiest tips:

Turn off location data being added to your photos.
This can often be done from you phone's camera app settings

Another brilliant video. Thank you so much.
With the UK wanting to introduce laws to make Protests illegal, it was interesting to consider how our online images and posts could implicate us in the future.

Adobe Photoshop used to have a function to remove EXIF data from files. Is there any other decent app or program that does this?

EXIF Tool comes in handy to change location or the raw data of the image. It’s a good purchase.

@naomibrockwell This is very complicated to me. My concern is that if everything in apple photo's is getting ready to be scanned anyways in the new update. How will that impact this metadata issue? I am trying to solve my digital photo storage with all these new developments I am wondering if I shouldn't just delete everything. If I do use one of these tools, will that have to be done on every device? Also, is there a way to change settings on iPhone to stop it from recording metadata? help me obiwonnaomi
