There's a interesting GDC Vault talk from 2010 ish -- free to watch. It's called 'Animation Warping for Responsiveness in FIFA Soccer'.The video is about taking canned animations and warping them to pose the player joints and the players locomotion. As you may know in FIFA the ball is sacrosanct, nobody can alter the path to 'make things easier'.

I got the Artificial intelligence for games book for free because im in a developing country.It made me so happy because i couldn't afford it otherwise.

Its really complicated to make the movements realistic. I guess that the ball receive is really hard. You probably need to set a few animations to happen when the ball is within a few distance and chose the best based on player's position, but there's also the contact with the defender. It's way hard to do these algorithms.

This is the best football game already because I'm pretty sure EA doesn't use real physics.
