RARE 1 WOOD DRIVER CHALLENGE...Retro Review

For this Retro Golf Review, we pay homage to the persimmon golf drivers with the Ben Hogan Golf Magnum Driver.

Like all GolfBox TV #RetroReviews with Alex Etches Golf, we take a look at the year 1953 - when the Ben Hogan Golf Brand Established and we look back at what major things happened in the year of '53.

Alex Etches tests this traditional vintage golf club with shots from the fairway and then from the tee to see how the performance differs from the modern golf drivers of 2019 - like the TaylorMade M5 Driver or the Callaway Epic Flash Driver.

That guys like Snead and Nicklaus could hit 300 yards with a persimmon driver and the old small ball, does make you wonder what they could have done with today's equipment in their hands.

I had these as a junior in the early 80s and I still have them

I used to play with wooden woods as I was born in 1950. At the time, I never heard anyone say that the club heads were too small. So, I guess it depends on what you are used to. You were trying to hit the ball far and you came up with about 275 yards and you are a big hitter. Put the old ball down there and you are about even with Ben Hogan at 260 yards. That is not bad at all. I still play with a wood driver set once in awhile. I have about 50 of them in my garage. Excellent video. Your tests are always well done.

Breakfast with Big Al, always a pleasure to look forward to!
I was born in 52 so my first Driver was no uncles old Persimmon MacGregor Finesse 1 Wood, I still have it in my Study as a memento of happy days. Like me, it's a bit bruised and battered and has seen better days; when I pass to the Great Fairway in the sky it's coming with me, so my Uncle & I can have some fun again!👴🏌️‍♂️💥⛳

Love the review. I remember my first set of clubs I bought from a yard sale had some woods like that.. definitely challenging to hit especially when never having played before.

I still have the wood drivers that I got from my dad when I started playing. I always like the fact that I can actually play decently with them.

If you really want some old golf balls I have a sleeve of 3 I would be happy to send you. They are "spalding topflite" from about mid 1970s (could be late 60s, around the same time that club was made). They are still in the original sleeve.

I played with Hogan clubs and irons in the 70’s, one wedge and a pre balata golf balls (hard). Played off national scratch and always wondered what would that calculate in today’s handicap system? A lot older now obviously and hit it about the same distance when I hit it good with the new equipment and all the tech.

Great review as always. I know the new Ben Hogan clubs don't get a lot of love. I see they have come out with drivers and fairway woods this year. Would love to see a review on those. Once again, great video and keep up the good work.

Clubs were heavier back then Al. I think that's half the reason why I swing to quick today. That, plus I just want to smash it like you do.

250 with balata was a monster drive 40 years ago.

Yes the old saying out the screws came pro club maker could remove sole plate and drill then place molten lead weight in the head to fix or aid shot shapes there was a a lot of tech in these baby's retro vintage you need to test with the small ball 🤪👍👍🤪🤪👍

I got a set of Le Master custom crafted woods withTrue Temper Dynamic Air steel shafts weighs a ton compared to high tech shafts today but man they felt look and felt amazing.
I can get it 260 with this old 1 wood.

When I started playing persimmons wood was the best, but I never could afford them so I had a cheap plastic driver maybe that's why I liked my irons better, but when I could afford the persimmons wood, the big bertha drivers were out so I went with that.

I’d love to see you crush a Linksoul driver. Been thinking of buying one myself, to be honest. I wonder if they would part with one for the channel.
