What does binding and loosing actually mean?

Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)

Binding and loosing has nothing to do with demons or Satan himself. It is the authority of God’s people to make decisions, with the Spirit of God, concerning issues not specifically mentioned in Scripture.

Thank you! I’ve been fighting a battle against false teachings and teachers that misuse this passage for many years. The way this passage gets misused in deliverance ministries actually puts people into bondage because it takes away from the finished work of Christ and the gospel. A characteristic of false teachers is that they heap verbal abuse on celestial beings Jude & 2 Peter. I appreciate people teaching sound doctrine because that’s what sets people free.,

I agree. This phrase i often heard from the wof preachers binding satan. My problem is, if they're able to bind demons how is it that there are still demons around ?

You cannot bind or loose something unless it has already been bound or
loosed in heaven. This translation accurately depicts the verb tense
found in the Greek: "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth
shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall
have been loosed in heaven" (Matthew 18:18 NASB). The Lord's Prayer
supports this: "Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is
in heaven" (Matthew 6:10 NASB). The Bible will tell you what has been
bound and what has been loosed. Man is not sovereign; God is sovereign.

There were about a dozen different meanings of "binding and loosening" for rabbis. In this context with St Peter, it has to do with excommunication.

So then why'd Jesus give the example may I ask, about binding the strongman if we're not suppose to bind any dark forces?

Thank you so much for bringing clarity to binding and loosing. The current teaching about this in Christianity is misleading the body of Christ and giving people a false hope of some kind of breakthrough, that never comes.

Regarding the Pharisees working themselves into positions of power to bind and loose as they pleased, it reminds me of the 7 Mountain Mandate from the NAR camp.

Thanks for the video!

The Greek says: whatever you bind in heaven will HAVE BEEN bound in heaven. In other words the initiative is in heaven, never on earth. The binding first takes place in heaven, then on earth. It doesn’t mean that it will be AS IF done in heaven.

You said this binding is not about Satan or demons? Then who is the strongman?
Jesus said 1st bind the strongman (prayer and fasting?) then you can bind the strongman and plunder his goods.

Does this also mean if you’re married that you’ll be married in heaven if you’re bound your spouse on earth you’ll be bound in heaven? Even though the scripture say we are not married in heaven.

Because of the location at the cave of the gates and hades at the base of mount Hermon where the fallen angels descended they would have understood that the binding and loosing was related to spiritual powers. Also he states the gates of hades can't withstand. It seems very clear that it is talking about authority over the demonic.

Would this also go under the category of “Spiritual Discernment??

Yes the authority to bind and loose represents authority on earth given to Saint Peter. The keys to the kingdom to bind and to loose is where the authority of the Catholic Church comes from. It has the keys of authority passed from Saint Peter to the Catholic Church via unbroken apostolic succession.

We can see that this early writing from the Church prooves Peter is the rock on whom the Church was built and whom Jesus gave his keys of authority too. The Catholic Church.

Wherefore the most holy and blessed Leo, archbishop of the great and elder Rome, through us, and through this present most holy synod together with the thrice blessed and all-glorious Peter the Apostle, who is the rock and foundation of the Catholic Church, and the foundation of the orthodox faith, hath stripped him of the episcopate, and hath alienated from him all hieratic worthiness. ‘Peter, the apostle, who is the rock and support of the Catholic Church.’” Paschasinus, Council of Chalcedon, Session III (A.D. 451).
