An incumbent like Trump is very difficult to beat. Out of all the candidates, Bernie is the only one who has any chance to do that: He is clean on personal issues, has a program, hits few issues that are at the heart of many people: Universal healthcare, minimum wage, more justice in economy.
I would not be surprised that at the end, the dems will allow Sanders to try it, a way to sacrifice him and put him to a political rest for good, if they are sure he will lose.
