Wondering how to replace your gear boot/gaitor/cover on your VW Polo 9N? This video will thoroughly explain the process I took to replace my crusty old gear cover with a much nicer one that fit the theme of the car.

This is the first in a series of videos where I will be (cheaply) upgrading my VW Polo 9N - so stay tuned for more videos in the coming weeks - there will be some very... 'creative' solutions to problems you don't even know exist!

Apologies for the lack of videos for the last few weeks - I was finishing my degree!

Thanks for watching - make sure to subscribe for weekly car content - don't miss out!

It’s a good idea, whenever you remove a panel and expose the innards, to have a can of silicone lube ready. Spray all moving contacts. Graphite is good as well. Silicone grease with Teflon is the best IHMO. Apply it liberally to rubber parts such as bushings to extend their longevity.

I removed and replaced a rubber dome beneath the part you showed as well as the leather gaiter on my Peugeot 505. It exposed shift linkages with nylon and rubber bushings, some of which I replaced. After lubing it thoroughly and reassembling, I could easily shift with one finger, which I found reassuring, as that’s just how a French car should be.

love the name, and also have a PPP going on! i found if you just loosen the metal clip slightly, it comes off and you can re use it... I've seen videos where people muller the metal clip, but with some care its reusable! cheers for the vid mate!

Can the annoying metal ring that fixes the selector be changed with a standard plastic clamp? (The ones that are long and you need to cut after you tighten them) or it is a must to use a metal ring with screw like the one you used? Thank you.

Fantastic video!
I bought a new gear boot for my 9N, the only problem is that I can't flip it into its place at the end, because 2 of 4 knot is different so it's not compatible.. What can I do?

My god getting the ear clamp off is hard. Been doing it for last 30 minutes and it’s loosened but still not off

I did that at my old Golf 4... and then I noticed that this new leather cover doesn't have the same length all around the hole. And of course I already had attached it to the stick the wrong way at that point. And now it looks kinda weird but better than before and there is no way I would ever fix it and replace this god damn leather cover ever again because I think I died a little when I spent an hour or so on attaching it to the stick. This is no work for a human.
