Easy step by step instructions for tying a rolling hitch or magnus hitch in this knot tying video tutorial. It is probably best identified by its Ashley Book of Knots number - #1734. Used to attach to a rod, pole, spar or another rope. If it is tied around the standing part to form a loop it becomes the taut line hitch or midshipman's hitch. it is designed for a lengthwise pull rather than a perpendicular pull. As such it can be used in climbing, arboriculture and construction to pass tools aloft. Firefighters use this knot in the fire service to haul hoses aloft. If a stronger knot is require the icicle hitch can be used instead. The knot can be backed up to make a rolling hitch and two half hitches. Closely related to the clove hitch.

This knot is epic. I'm only finding people talking about it with reference to sailing, I thought woodsmen would love this knot.

This is Ashley's version 1 (ABOK # 1734) of the Rolling hitch. As shown, this is just a Clove hitch with an initial extra turn. This version is the best one when tying around a pole. The hitch shown here is the same as the very popular Taut-line hitch used to set tarps.

On the other hand, Ashley's version 2 (ABOK # 1735) is better when tying around a rope.

We use this knot offshore a lot. To pick up hoses and pipe.

What if I want to pull in both directions? Would that be a problem ?

So if this knot has a specific direction of pull that needs to be followed, then what is the benefit of this knot over a regular clove hitch?

Life @ sea is hell simply bcos of the treatment some bosuns and people who has higher titles or ranks impose on the incoming once its sad,
Life at sea is supposed to be comfortable because we aren't in jail, Try and have patients and teach the lil ranks the job perfectly thank you

Seems like a taut line but over a pole instead of itself

This is a right angle hitch. The rolling hitch would have the second round turn INSIDE the first one instead of outside of it before going over to the other side for the half hitch.

Could it be a fair observation to also call the rolling hitch a double constrictor knot?!??

This isn't the rolling hitch.  What you did there IS the taut line hitch.
