Can You Have Good Morals Without God?

Does the concept of "goodness" have to originate with God? After all, humans are naturally inclined to follow what's commonly referred to as The Golden Rule, or so we've been told. In this clip, Frank confronts the notion that humans can or should be good in the absence of God.

Kudos to the guy asking the question. He seems sincere and doesn’t resort to emotional outbursts.

You cannot have 8 billion subjective views of what is right and wrong....society would not survive that.

I was hoping the guy asking the question was going to realise his error, break into tears and receive Christ there and then .

. . . . I did in 2005, no regrets over 18 years later !

The heart is deceitful above all things, and is desperately wicked.

Romans 2:12-16 directly addresses the concept of morality without God.

:-- For as many as have sinned without law (moral rules) will also perish without the law. As many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. It isn’t the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified. For when Gentiles who don’t have the law (moral rules) do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the law (moral rules) written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them, in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.

1 John 3:7-8
“Little children (believers, dear ones), do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who practices righteousness [the one who strives to live a consistently honorable life--in private as well as in public--and to conform to God’s precepts] is righteous, just as He is righteous.

“The one who practices sin [separating himself from God, and offending Him by acts of disobedience, indifference, or rebellion] is of the devil [and takes his inner character and moral values from him, not God]; for the devil has sinned and violated God’s law from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. .”

Frank’s last point in this clip is crucial, I.e., there is nothing in nature that causes the imparting of any sense of morality in humans. Certainly there are instincts in nature, but not a sense of morality. If there is no God, then those who live a long life getting everything they have dreamed of at the expense of everyone else are certainly the smartest of all.

As a 75 year old atheist I continue to live a responsible life because I prefer living this way.

If good behavior were "grounded in our biology", would you not reach the conclusion that our biology as a species has been deteriorating at an alarming rate over the past few years?

Bless his heart! This Kat tried his best to explain Morality without God! Doesn't work!

I'm pretty sure guys like Hitler and Stalin were absolutely convinced beyond all doubt that they were moral. Let that sink in.

Old question...I have never heard a new question by free thoughts. They come in different form but basically all old same question whether it's about morality, free will, age of the universe.etc

By God's standard there is no one that's good.

Nature established morality by being the first thing we hand to band together for against. We survived the dark by working together. Sometimes against. For survival. We dont have much to survive against now in most rich countries. One can easily go about life doing nothing now.

Romans 2:14-15 ESV
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. [15] They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them

We are not good people. Period. Our morals are lacking. God’s standard is perfect morality and we fall short.

Jesus, hear my prayers these past three years have been difficult on me I am weak. Give me guidance. Please come back soon I don’t know how much longer I can hold on. I’m so tired of struggling every month to get by. As a single parent things are hard on me both of my sons are autistic and I’m constantly struggling to provide the basic necessities for them I’m so ashamed. Lord heal me. I suffered an heart attack two years ago and still battling lupus I’m so overwhelmed. Give me strength Lord as I constantly struggle to pay bills and constantly struggle to buy groceries for my children. BUT no matter what I KEEP FAITH. Even though I want to give up. Jesus please take the fear of homelessness from my heart. Please save me and my children from poverty.

"You don't get morality from biology." GREAT line... I'm using that one.

What Turek does not seem to understand is that morality is a system of value, and ALL value stems from subjective experience. God cannot decree what is valuable if it doesn't align with what we experience. But this doesn't mean that moral truth has to be purely subjective. It is INTERSUBJECTIVE because it is a social system rather than an individual one.

If Turek took the time to think through how value operates, he would see that this obsession with "objectivity" is meaningless.
We have (and do) have moral truth that is both binding and valuable for everyone without imposing "god" on the equation.

People can do good things but they can't stop doing bad things.Thats the problem. Secular man has a sin problem he refuses to acknowledge and can't solve without God. Even the best morality mankind can conceive is still polluted with sin and no one will ever be able to follow it consistently. That's man's indictment on himself that he's not good.
