Demystifying Platform Engineering with OSS - Gedd Johnson, Defense Unicorns
"DevOps is dead - long live Platform Engineering!" - Chris Stephension, CTO, Humanitec Platform engineering has quickly become a ubquitous term in the software community, but what exactly is a platform, and how can platform engineers help organizations deliver faster? The purpose of a platform is to provide a consistent, standardized mechanism for building, securing and deploying applications. However, the variety of platform components and available tooling make the task of building a platform from scratch daunting. Implementing these components and understanding the tradeoffs between developer freedom and platform opinionation is the crux of platform engineering. This talk will demystify what platform engineering is, explain common K8s-based platform architectures and share lessons learned from using open source tooling to build platforms in the healthcare and finance industries. The presentation will also include a live demonstration of how to build a secure platform from the ground up using exclusively open source software. The goal of this talk is to share, collaborate and learn what platform engineering is and how open source software can simplify and accelerate the development of internal developer platforms.
