Growing up Lao In America

Khao lam is a very unique Lao dessert because it uses nature for its cooking vessel. I am talking about the strong and sturdy bamboo stalks that are used to cook these delicious sticky rice desserts. I like pairing it with durian because it will melt in your mouth.

Thank you all for the love and support! It means a lot to me as I read your supportive comments and see that many other immigrants from other cultures also had similar experiences and to know that i'm not alone. And to see people who can empathize with this experience and giving space to just listen is just as important. When I created this video, I wanted to express my feelings and experiences, especially knowing that other Lao kids and people have gone through the same thing but might not have shared it. I hope this video creates a space where we can all be more vulnerable and share our feelings. My mission has always been to use Lao food to uplift and center my community. If you're interested in this recipe and other Lao recipes, consider joining my website newsletter. I send out new Lao recipes and updates on my upcoming Lao cookbook. My fiancé is part Cambodian and Vietnamese. He was born & raised in America but received similar treatment. Your culture is awesome and unique. Keep shinin’ man!

The fact that teachers couldn't handle one extra syllable that is perfectly within American English phonetics is wild.

“Hiding from the uncle carrying a lot of pain” awakened a memory that hit me like a truck. Followed for the Lao food, stayed because someone understands.

Being an immigrand kid means being a part time adult. This sentence really catched me! I went through the same experience as lao girl growing up in germany.

I’ve always been fascinated by how similar Thai and Lao languages are. I 100% understand what your name means, and I want to say that it’s a really beautiful name. Golden light and stars? That’s an epic name! Those bullies really didn’t understand how beautiful your name was.

I felt every part of this. I’m glad you’re so brave as to tell your testimony. It’s so bitterly wholesome how we can all grow up so different. Different interests, customs, cultures. But have so many things in common with our stories growing up at the same time. My dad spoke 7 different languages fluently, but people would make fun of his accent and say they couldn’t understand him. I sometimes would translate when he was frustrated with them… among other things, this video really had me remember those times

Idk if its translated the same in Lao or not but as a Thai, your name is so pretty... if i were to translate it into english it would be the golden stars that shines brightly.

I just found your channel through the almighty YouTube algorithm.

As an Afro Latina, I want to tell you that I absolutely love your culture. Your food reminds me a lot of my own which reminds me of home. I am proud of you for teaching your culture. Do not let it die.

Sounds like the typical Laos family. Although, my daughter enjoyed those times playing with her cousins outside while the women (myself included) were in the kitchen most of the day cooking and cleaning. Yes, the husbands were usually in the garage drinking, smoking and playing cards. My daughter's father's name was also Saeng. Her uncle used to pick mushrooms, truffle, and fish for extra money for the family. My daughter used to get made fun of for her eye shape which she used to hate. I am not Laos myself, I am however from an immigrant family from France. My daughters Father, Mom and 9 sisters came from Laos. Thank you for sharing that story.

แสงทอง ดวงดารา is such a gorgeous and adorable name ;; If only they had known the meaning behind your name. You're pretty admirable!

Much love from an Indian brother, I was an immigrant in San Francisco for most of my life before moving back to my home country due to complications, but I knew I always had those friends with similar experiences by my side, that I could share my joy and pains with. 💞

I’m not an immigrant, but holy heck my dude, I am SO SORRY people did that to you. My scrappy little inner child would like a word with these people.

Thank you for sharing this. I know we all have pain, but even though my bad experiences were different from yours, I feel stronger knowing there are people like you who have done it, and still are. For whatever it’s worth from a stranger on the internet, my deepest respect and gratitude, because it’s bravery to share, and it also gives me a little bit more confidence to work through my own stuff. Thank you! 💕

I’m Bangladeshi, and growing up, I’ve had the exact opposite problem when it comes to English. Alhamdulillah, I’ve been blessed with an American accent and grammar from watching related media at a young age. As an immigrant kid in school, teachers wouldn’t be as patient with me because they thought I grew up there, and being treated like I was stupid for not knowing something I’ve never been introduced to in an Asian school system sucked.

I'm hmong. Grew up just about the same way you did and had to translate for my mom and relatives alot. I've built up a lot of tolerance and understanding (especially with other minorities who don't speak English well) and have been the one to bridge the gap between my culture and American culture. Thank you for your story (and recipes). It was beautiful.
