After completing Quake 2 RTX, I decided to try a community-made ray-traced version of the original Quake 1. Playing through the entire Episode 1 on Nightmare difficulty.

This is how my brain remembers how quake looked when i first played it with a 3dfx card :)

So glad John Carmack was big on open sourcing things so cool stuff like this is possible, wish more people would do it.

First time i played Quake in 1996, everything was software rendered, in 1997 I played Quake II and I bough a 3Dfx additional card, then I played again Quake, it was a real revolution in rendering and fluidity in 480p. So when I see this video with an RTX 4090, it's fun 🙂 and nice.

The water rendering effect is really stunning. It was already stunning in 1996, god bless the 90s.

The lightning is nice, but i got more interested when you started revealing all the secrets. I never thought that there is this much of them.

Well played. The lighting is so impressive and really underlines the quantum leap that this game meant.

Quake is one of my most favourite games. It is still very playable even nowadays.

I miss my youth, building a lan using bnc cables and experience a 3+ fps deathmatch for the first time was epic ...

Aah, Quake exactly what it looked like back in 1996...at least in my memory when I first played it as a kid. 🙃

Watching this brings back good memories. Quake wouldn't be without Trent Resnor.

It looks like you might have played Quake before. The ray tracing is incredible!

Looks great!
BTW: in E1M6 (19:46) you could've just run past the shambler near the exit. Same way as you skipped 4 fiends and a shambler near the exit of E1M3 (10:10).

I'm mainly impressed with how you know where all the secrets are : )
I ended up editing the lighting a bit to reduce the purple sky glow and the toxic water color. In general I found RT in this mode too dark for most stages (they aren't realistically lit to begin with) and used the other mode.

I know its not a speedrun showcase...It's an RTX showcase.... but good job on the quaking side!

The first world is my favourite because it's the most varied, it has all, castles, necropolis, caverns, temples with no gravity and a final boss.

That looks great. I have to take a look at the old 3dfx version... sometimes I think that was a future lost, You know, Unreal in 3dfx was ahead of it's time.

I don't know what it is, but the sound design in this game always amazes me. Amazing soundtrack of course we all know, matched with the sound effects. It's just so good.

Part of why quake 1 was so "fast" and was possible, was that maps were created with pre-generated lightmaps, so the lighting was faked for the most part. This is really great to see the advancment in technology and how it affects this game. thanks for the video.
