Herman Witkam - Favourite Instruments

In this short video, Herman Witkam shows us one of his favorite instruments for making cinematic music: the ronroco, a baritone version of the charango. It's an instrument from the Andes region of South America and it's usually tuned in a minor chord. It can be used for a variety of scenes and genres, like drama, but even for action sequences, if you use it in a rhythmic way. However, it can sometimes be a challenge to convince directors to use these types of instruments – even in the case of a chromatic instrument like this ronroco, that can easily be used to play European classical music as well.

Herman Witkam is a film composer, multi-instrumentalist and sound designer based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Since first enrolling in the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht composition program in 2004, he has composed scores for numerous feature films, television series and documentaries, as well as for games, commercials and theater projects.
