I can't imagine the many tears Queen Liliuokalani shed for her people as she wrote this beautiful song.

I lost a cousin today, native born Hawaiian and still lived on O'ahu. This was one of his favorite songs, rest in peace Jason, until we meet again 🖤

Recently lost my Mama. She was born in Hawaii. This has been stuck in my head. Absolutely the most beautiful version I have ever heard. ❤

English translation

The rain proudly lulls by the cliff
And quietly brushes through the forest
It hones in at the core
The Lehua Flower of the vale.

[Chorus:]
Goodbye, goodbye
The sweet and gentle one living in the distance
One fond embrace
I leave
Until we meet again
Fond memories bring me back
And renew sweet ones
Of times past
Goodbye, my love
You are mine regardless

[Chorus]

I realize your beauty
The fragrant rose of Maunawili
Right over there, by the lovebirds
Drinking its nectar.

"Queen Lili‘uokalani (1838-1917), born in Honolulu and the daughter of a high chief and chieftess, was the first sovereign queen, and the last monarch of Hawai‘i. Lili‘uokalani dedicated much of her reign to restoring native Hawaiian rights, but a group of American plantation and business owners, backed by the U.S. military, staged a coup to overthrow her in 1893."

Only my humble opinion but this is the best version I have ever heard. Sung and played exactly how it should be, simply and with emotion straight from the heart.

Mahalo you guys, my uncle who lives on oahu is passing and I was searching for the perfect parting gift for my family there, untill I came across this. You inspired me to learn how to play, sing, dance, and record the performance for this song with my last living grand parent and one of my close uncle's. thank you for putting this video up, because it will help so much with my project. BEAUTIFUL! aloha!

I have been listening to this song all day as I pray for the people of Maui. I cannot imagine the loss they are feeling right now. The devastation of the fires is unreal. They say it is raining in Maui today. Perhaps it is the tears of Queen Liliuokalani for her people. They are praying the rain will clear the mountain range & reach Lahainah 🌧️ 💔 🌸

To hear this beautiful song sung in a time of loss like this helps because its meaning runs so deep and conveys that hope follows sorrow 💔🌧️🌈

Why the thumbs down? What's to dislike about it? Beautiful singing and playing, and authentic rendition of a Hawaiian classic, not like the corrupted ("hollywood") versions you often hear.

Saw Train to Busan today and as soon as this played, I bawled my eyes out. Such a beautiful song.

I love to hear her singing this song. This is the best version I have ever seen. Listening to it more than 10 times already but I still want to hear again .

Being stationed out here with the navy is crazy. Everyone seems to just go wild with all the tourist destinations but hawaii seems to have a bittersweet melody to it. I have to leave eventually. Hawaii once you have been here a while feels like a very fond memory from a very long time ago. It chokes me up, there is magic here.

How can she sing this song without tearing? That’s a feat in itself.

I’ll never forget visiting Iolani Palace and listening to this as they took us to the room with the quilt where Queen Lili'uokalani was held. So much emotion and sorrow in one room.

The naturallity, the simplicity, the purity of this video gives it such a heavenly presentation, I have considered it one of the best musical videos of the times . I have watched it more than 50 times and continue to do so as a therapeutic meditation. God Bless This Hawaiian trio and there beloved belated Queen for such a lovely song .

Travelling to Oahu and Maui and watching Lilo and Stitch as a kid really made me fall in love with Hawaiian music.

Listening to this days after the attack in my hometown, Christchurch. Maori and Hawaiian culture have many commonalities, and this beautiful and sad song applies to the current sorrow there. Kia Kaha and Aloha Nui Loa x

I've been wanting a good ukulele for a while now and have recently swapped a banjo/guitar for a banjo/uke.
So, now I have to start the learning process all over again PLUS as in this case, learn a new language too!
What fun.
Never too old to learn, I'll be 70 next birthday.
Aloha Oe
