I went through college and studied advertising, just to, as you saud... come out on the other end with such outdated information and practically no knowledge at all about how to advertise on social media. 100% agree with you that qualifications are not necessarily required, these days all you really need is social proof and the way you mention as working for family and friends for free for a while was also the way I acquired my actual first experience when just fresh out of college.
