No one says "you _can_ have a mistress, side chick" etc... It's not illegal, but it's still widely regarded as immoral. The only difference with a second wife in islamic culture, is that it's _not_ considered immoral. But yes, they are also expected to provide for them, which can't be said of non-muslims who are simply polyamorous/unfaithful.

While I don't necessarily agree with him, it's funny, because him advocating for polygamy is what a lot of leftists in western countries do too - as long as everyone is consenting, it's none of anyone elses business, right? And yet when this person says it, it's controversial. I honestly think people are bent out of shape because he is making an argument based on his religion for it, which I can understand, but advocacy for polygamy is actually nothing new, and might even be something you would agree with tolerating, even if you don't agree with his reasoning for it.
