Hockey Neck Guard Saves High Schoolers Life

I used to chirp all the players wearing neck guards. 3 months ago I took a skate to the neck/jawline area, 1 inch away from my jugular vein. 16 stitches on the inside and out. I am still recovering from this injury and think all the time how close I could have been to dying. What if I had positioned myself just an inch the other way, or if the other player had? Not looking for sympathy here, but just wanted to tell everyone this can happen. I was not wearing neck protection before, but I will now when I get back on the ice. It's just not worth the risk, even if you do look a little funny. It can happen so quickly.

Wearing a guard makes sense to me. But this story is odd. "Even these (skates) can't cut through kevlar of a neck guard." But the parents said the neck guard impeded the cut by at least 2mm. Would have been much more convincing if they showed us the sliced neck guard.

God bless him, glad he's ok. I stumbled upon this video when searching for a neck guard to use while hiking where there might be mountain lions lurking. I wonder if this piece of equipment will suffice against the jaws of a mountain lion.
