The Pontiac Trans Am powered by the 6.6-litre V8 saw its final year of production in 1979. It was killed off by the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. Pontiac needed a new performance solution for the Trans Am. The Performance Division engineers decided the 1980 & 81 Pontiac Trans Am would instead be powered by a turbocharged 301ci - V8. The turbo 301 (really 302ci, but called a 301 to differentiate it from Ford's 302) differed from the standard 301 Pontiac introduced in 1977 in that the block was fortified, pistons and head gaskets were more robust, and it also had a high-pressure oil pump. There was an electronically controlled Garrett TBO-305 turbocharger (sourced from Buick) that fed nine pounds of boost through a modified version of the Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor. To keep things running properly, Pontiac added a knock sensor that would retard the ignition timing when pre-ignition knock was detected. For 1981 this combination was rated at 200 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque. The Transmission was a Modified Turbohydromatic TH-350 with an electronically controlled torque converted that would lock-up when driving at Highway speeds. This was coupled to a 3.08 rear gear choice.
Even with the drop in performance from 1979, it was more appealing than the standard 301 that threw down just 150 horsepower and 245 pound feet of torque. It was a lighter engine and provided a better weight balance to the Trans AM. These final 2nd Generation Trans AM's handled very well when equipped with the WS6 Special Performance Package. While not quite as fast in a straight line as the 1979 6.6 Litre, they were considered a Grand Touring Sports Car and provided a Spirited and Exhilarating driving experience. If you have never driven one, you are really missing out on the true Pontiac Excitement they provided. They are simply a pleasure to drive.
The hood used on the Turbo Trans AM featured an asymmetrical driver's side power bulge needed to provide clearance for the turbo and carburetor. On the rear of that bulge, facing the driver, there was a boost gauge with three horizontal orange lights labeled “NORMAL”, “MEDIUM”, and “HIGH.” This provided a Visual indicator as the Turbo Boost built.
The hood and sail panel Decals were redesigned for 1981 using a new two color scheme and the Trans Am Fender/spoiler callouts were redesigned to match. The Pontiac Turbo Trans AM's iconic Firebird hood decal had a larger lick of flame coming from its mouth than the standard bird of previous years. The disco era was coming to an end and these decals were less audacious than their predecessors. Some might claim more tasteful. Five different colors were offered: Red, Gold, Silver, Blue, and Orange in both standard and turbo versions. With 14 car colors on the palette for 1981 and 5 different birds the Trans Am offered diversity beyond any other car with 70 different exterior color/decal combinations available.
