Important bit that many beginners will miss:
"*When you know the rules of design, * you are able to more likely break them."

Really awesome to hear your insight dude. A lot of wisdom here. Thanks for everything you do man! You're an inspiration!

Trust your eye over the align tool. That is super refreshing to hear! There has been so many times that I aligned to the artboard and it felt off!

It's not symmetrical...but it IS balanced.

imagine the creator of the logo watching this and being like, I just threw something together lol

I like your point! I agree you shouldn’t solely look at the alignment and mathematics behind the design. If it looks good, it is good :)

I like the sweeping motion of the 7. The curve combined with the two colors makes me think of a road (the green part) and someone pulling off the road (the orange part) to make a quick stop. The fact that the orange part curves downward makes me think of a "you are here" arrow and I can imagine driving down a highway and just seeing the tall signs of 7-Eleven, McDonald's, etc. The 7 is pointing down from the sign at the actual store. At the same time, once you're at the store, the 7 looks like a fast on-ramp, indicating how you can get in & out quickly.

I have been designing logos for years and I agree in everything that you said! "Always trust your eyes" is what I always tell myself! Thanks for this video!

The recent video on the google logo and this one really helped me making my logo designs more balanced.

Before I felt like I was forced to always make everything align with eachother and make ratios and distances mathematically correct. If it still felt unbalanced, it simply didn't work (I thought).

Now i went back to some concepts i left behind and stopped forcing myself to apply these rules. Making them optically balanced by only using my eye. And some of them came out great!

The original designer must've been like "Fuck it! It looks good so there you go" xD

What I like is that you’re always learning, and are more than okay with it. That’s classy !

Another great video Will. I’d been conflicted with breaking the rules in my last project... I’ve decided learning to break the rules takes as much effort as learning them in the first place!
