Kong didn't leave Godzilla completely unconscious (or dead) because he stopped hitting, if he continued to hit, he would leave Godzilla unconscious until Mothra arrived and interfered.

This scene was the polar opposite of round 3 in Hong Kong. Instead of Godzilla going Croc Mode we see King Kong go Beast Mode.
I do think this answers any questions if Kong can win in a fight against the KOTM. This showed that Kong is capable. This doesn't make Godzilla weaker. He's still the toughest in a 1v1.
Is he a better King? Now the MV now has 2 different classifications. Titans and Great Apes. Godzilla is King of the surface world and his controlled titans. Kong is the King of the Great Apes and Alpha Ruler of the Hollow Earth.
The question of the MV or purpose was to find out were Kong belongs in a world with Godzilla. Both have their own territories or realms. After we get a Godzilla focused GxK film they should go opposite of the Avengers. A man vs Nature plot that leads to a modern day Titan War between Godzilla and the titans under his rule against Kong and his army of Great Apes and Shimo. Shimo will protect her King which is Kong. I don't think man and monster can live in blissful harmony. The twist is Kong defending Humanity who is really the bad guy.

I think Godzilla attacked him here mostly because he figured if Kong is apparently challenging him again then he must've sided with Scar King like every other ape. Not an unreasonable assumption..
