Baxter and Jonathan get into the best Nitro finishes of the big 3. Do you need A Nitro Finish or is Poly the right one for you!

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite YouTube channels.

The charcoal PRS at 13:30 is mine! Haha...where did you get that photo? I don’t mind you using it, of course...just curious where you found it.

I like these guys, but every time I watch one of their videos, I can only think of someone from Duck Dynasty talking guitars with Robert Smith of The Cure.

I have a standard les Paul sitting in my window to try and fade it (lol) a VOS Gibby, several nitro fenders and one poly fender (acoustics excluded although Martin ain’t no shab when it comes to nitro) . The VOS nails the thin nitro IMO. Poly makes it tougher to find a good guitar. Nitro or death.

I hate to be argumentive, but my 1999 Peavey Wolfgang USA made guitar is THE best smelling instrument ever. I took it to a music shop last week and without saying anything about it the employees were passing it around to smell it. Maybe it's the beeswax finished neck, but it's seriously aromatic. My gibson are in a distant 2nd place in the smell category.

Agree with the praise for the American Original series - great guitars. I have a 50’s Tele and Strat and a 60’s Strat. I am left-handed and Fender do not do the 60’s Tele as a lefty.

Man, this is a great video because I’ve been nerding out about nitro finishes for pretty much a year 😂😂 I’ve been looking into getting an American Original in hopes that within a few years of gigging it it would show some real tasty wear. Can’t decide between 60’s Strat or 60’s Tele, OR the colors!! Man, I used to work at a guitar store and the smell of Gibson is literally like nothing else.. I would buy hundreds of candles or cologne bottles.. But is it just me or do Gibsons not wear as easily as Fender? Maybe worn gibsons just arent as popular, who knows. Also I’m glad I’m not the only one, when Baxter said he gets snobby and if it’s finished in poly he doesn’t like it as much, that’s exactly me 😂😂 I also own one of the purple 50’s road worn tele’s they did last year, and I love that guitar, but now for me it’s time to also pick up a nice American nitro guitar! Just gotta choose which one.

Butyl-acetate is the sweet smell in nitro lacquers.!!
Really all of the acetates have a sweet smell, but butyl was found to be the best nitro thinner.
I prefer fresh shellac with a small amount of gum benzoin added, smells like vanilla.!!
Plus shellac gives a much better longer lasting finish when French polished
That is much easier to repair and last for centuries.!!

I love what the custom shops of Fender/Gibson do with their nitro. Very thin and beautiful. The normal USA production seems to be too much for me but nitro is nitro and I’ll take it over poly any day

I don't know what they were shooting during the Cunetto era of the Fender Custom Shop, but a Nocaster I had from then had the best finish I have ever felt.

Really liking your channel. You guys have great chemistry as well! I just got a new 35th Anniversary Custom 25 and the finish is so thin that I can see the finish sort of sunken down into the wood grain in places...it’s really cool

Another fascinating discussion. You guys take care with Hurricane Sally. Just re-entering lockdown in NE England. Ho hum. More Baxter and Jonathan. More Fretbuzz. Really enjoy your channel.

Fender has used nitrocellulose lacquer on their garden variety American reissues since 1982 -- that didn't just start.

We need a Nitro Fragrance for Guitar Players. Smell like an opening new Gibson case!! I would prefer a reliced Gibson then a Fender. Not too excited about PRS guitars (without a good reason).

I Love Fenders also! I like the Nitro, I have a couple fenders that are, AO 50's, a Highway One, then I repaint several of my others in Nitro

I don’t know why this video kept showing up on my feed this week but this really sums it up. I love playing my fender strat and it is so comfortable. It’s the guitar I play the most…. Nitro relic Sherwood green metallic… and plugged into a 65DRRI it’s perfection. Then I see a video like this and step to my other room with the blues jr and the 59RI 60th anniversary (yes price mid-matched) and play the best most soulful improvisational mess I have ever played IMHO all for my wife to hear through the walls. The smell of the LP and the feel…. This video does a good job of summing up the intangible nonsense of finishes, resonance, feel, and mojo…. Thanks.

PRS hands down. You will never see a company obsess over the composition and thickness consistency of their finish like Paul does, and you will never find a single flaw in their finishes no matter how many you look at.

I'm not sure how Fender is even in the running.

I got the Vintera road worn 50s Strat in surf green and I love the whole thing. The look, the feel, and definitely the smell. Many features I wanted at a great price.
