The use of renewable energy sources is a priority task for Kazakhstan’s sustainable development. As a part of its implementation, hydro power plants are constructed in Kazakhstan’s regions. One of them is built on the Lepsy River in Almaty. It is a dam-type hydropower plant with the capacity of 17 megawatts. The annual gross power generation totals about 68 million kilowatts per hour. It is the second hydropower plant constructed on the river. Over four billion tenge of private investments were spent on its construction. Electricity will be generated at the minimum water flow rate. The expansion of the network of hydropower plants will help to reduce the power deficit in the region and will contribute to the expansion of the irrigated land area.
