When I read the book, I found it hard to sympathize with Andrei especially after the scene where he treated Lise so cruelly, but his death scene in this series (and of course James Norton's sympathetic portrayal) helped me in understanding the character, to some extent. This music is so beautiful and it fits him.

I love War and Peace for the way it captures war. The struggle of man kind. The epic, once in a life time adventure young men take. The adventure they never return from. Andrei's character captures that feeling. Goes off to War and mind you a justified war. He's young, you can tell he hates his life to a certain degree. He'd rather die than gossip with aristocrats. You know he's conflicted. He regrets the way he treats his wife and you can tell he's unemotional to it. Towards the end of his life he learns to love again, he finds the simple things in life enjoyable. He forgives Anatole for wronging him. Listen to this music as you read this, you can hear it and feel it. God I love it.

I loved but hated Anatole (loved the dark flirtation and perfect portrayal the actor did of the character, but hated how it led to Andrei wanting to return to war and end up getting himself killed). Then I sobbed so hard when Andrei died. Couldn’t believe it at all, it felt like it was a mistake.
But then, oddly, I didn’t hate when I saw her end up with Pierre. Usually if the romance in a series doesn’t play as I wanted it to, I rally and fight to believe the ending. This ending just felt right. Andrei’s death was so perfect and beautifully shot that I’m glad it happened. It felt life changing for all the characters, and for myself included.

Plus, the music is just breathtaking and perfectly fit for the series. This mini series doesn’t get the credit or acknowledgement it deserves. Seriously.

As Andrei walks into the sun and his soul flies away, I cried. Then when Natasha says, "Where did he go? Where is he now?" I sobbed. I saw the mini series and then read the book. This scene is in the book word for word. Sobbed while reading Tolstoy's beautiful words and you cannot help but grieve for Andrei's death and this music captures his life, grief and his sorrow.

This series really got me. I was surprised by how deeply moved me. Really nice production, and amazing story by Tolstói. He truly grasped the human nature, with its lights and shadows.

I appreciate someone watching the series and liking it, but one must read the book once, twice, perhaps 3 times during a lifetime to truly understand the real meaning of life. One can not leave earth without reading war & peace.
