Jiraiya was literally collecting Intel whilst fighting pain.They both lacked information.

I think its more that itachi tends to be very efficient. Most ninjas seem to wear down their opponents, but Itachi has a lot of abilities that if you lack a defense to them, he will pretty much instantly win. He's good at selecting abilities that his opponents have no counter to.

Jiraya had little to no understanding how Pain's rinegan worked at the start of the fight. I would even argue that Orochimaru knew about sharingan more than Jiraya knew about rinegan at the time their fights took place. The skills of Itachi and Pain are way too different to just compare like this. While Pain has more destructive techniques, he was shown to be weak against genjutsu. Itachi would have a decent chance against Pain. This analysis is complete bull.

Like Itachi said that he was the perfect counter to Kabuto, he was also the perfect counter to Orochimaru and his particular abilities. And yes, that's usually Orochimaru's downfall, not having information. It's also how he lost his arms to Hiruzen. He didn't know of the abilities of the Reaper Death Seal. Otherwise, he'd likely have created counters or found ways around it.

Jiraya had no idea what pain could do. It's even stated in the anime/Manga. He was going there to gather information on pain which he did by fighting him and then sending the toads to tell konoha, which is why they had a chance. It was also stated by pain, that if Jiraya did know about his moves, it might've ended differently. Jiraya is just goated and that all there is to it lol. Itachi said they would die if Itachi and kisame fought Jiraya. They had to run from him.

Orochimaru was a selflearning science nerd with medical knowledge but he really lacked the skills to obtain power without the use of it he was just a glorified mad scientist

Jiraya is so unbelievably underrated by the fans and I don’t understand why, like, he’s not a bad character and he’s clearly skilled, being offered the hokage position 3 times and having the record for most successful completed missions out of any shinobi in history. He went toe to toe with pain in his own turf with almost no information on his abilities, the problem with orochimaru vs itachi is that itachi is an incredibly hard counter to orochimaru who didn’t understand what he was even getting into.
