The Paliani Monastery is probably the oldest monastery of Crete and of Europe in general. The monastery is build on ancient fundaments. Although the origin of the monastery itself is early christian from the 4th century AD. Paliani monastery is a nunnery and located close to the village of Venerato in the Malevizi region of the island of Crete in Greece. The region of Malevisi is at the south of the capital Herakleion. The name of Malevizi comes from the Venetian word Malviccino which means 'bandit'.
