Why Katana Were Shaved by Samurai #Shorts

Tachi is a long and well curved type of katana (nihon-tō) that was originally used on horseback during the era when samurai were fighting one-on-one battles. And the typical katana we imagine today are the shorter and less curved Uchi-katana that was used on foot, and I’m sure you’ve heard that these two types of katana are very different.

However, did you know that there are some uchi-katana that used to be tachi? When the styles of war changed from one-on-one fights on horses to group battles on foot, the mainstream sword changed from the long Tachi to the shorter Uchi-katana.

But samurai wouldn’t of course just throw away their Tachi because it can’t be used anymore. So many of them were shaved by the inner handle (nakago) to shorten them to a Uchi-katana or even shorter lengths.

By the way, I really love such katana called “磨り上げ Suriage” in Japanese. This is one that was sold at Tozando, my favorite katana shop in Kyoto, but you can see it is more curved and have a longer tip than a regular Uchi-katana. I’d love to ask this swordsmith to make me a katana someday.

Great video! huge Japanese sword enthusiast here, I LOVE the tachi style swords but the handachi koshirae is my absolute favorite! Because it’s a kind of mix of tachi/katana

Being a larger person, when learning kendo and kenjutsu. I personally fell in love with the tachi. However, after years of practice I moved onto the nodachi. I even met the great Norimitsu in Kibitsu. It was a humbling sight.

I heard it was also because of the samurai fighting style. That since they mostly relied on giant pikes as weapons, they needed a sword that they can quickly draw in the event an enemy got past the pike point. It's also why the quick draw was so iconic to the katana. After an enemy gets past the tip of your pike, if you aren't fast enough on the draw, you die.

That is pretty innovative how they modified the weapon to suit a newer form of battlefield.

There is a spaceship called Tachi (later, Rocinante) in The Expanse books and tv show.
Now I know why.

I also like to have a longer Katana too. Not to long maybe just a few more inches because of my height. If it's to long it won't be as fast, so the right size is extremely critical. What people are forgetting is that back in the Edo period the average size of people that used Katana's were smaller in height and weight to today's standards. People are only going to get taller. Till the average size is 5 feet 10 inchs. With the exception of some reaching over 6 feet tall. Where they will feel more comfortable using a longer Katana. Like myself and most of my friends. There are many styles of Katana's harmon and some have even been forgotten in time. I would love to give it a try using science along with other compounds mixed with the mud used to get the right patterns to pop out at you. Like in the 1600s styles. Thanks for sharing your video's and stories with us, also the information you give use is really appreciated. For some reason I feel my last life I was Japanese. Just because I know things that I shouldn't have a clue about. It just comes naturally to me. Well maybe someday I might really find out how I know theses things. Thanks again

so THAT'S what Uchi-Katana means! i was always curious about why Dark Souls and Elden Ring used that term.

I remember some people arguing it was the koshirae that made the distinction, but I feel like they have overlooked the Nakago being shortened aspect to go with it.

In Vision fo Escaflowne, theain characters, can and Allen, used tachi, which I discovered later on was the type of sword, and I had thought that it was just a fantasy version if katana. And although the anime was fantasy, they had still incorporated different types of historical things throughout the show from different cultures and people's from history.
