Vestas Sailrocket 2. Through the barriers.

VESTAS Sailrocket 2 has been designed and built to break through the real physical barriers that limit conventional craft. She is an evolution of the teams first boat and uses the same concepts for stability. VSR2 is ultimately a powerful, efficient and stable platform for testing high speed foil designs out at very high speeds in real world environments. The team are about to trial their second generation high speed foils. The first foils hit a peak speed of 54.4 knots but failed to provide the breakthrough they were looking for. The team feel that life really begins for this boat over 60 knots. They have learnt many speed sailing lessons the hard way and don't expect an easy path forward. They are hoping that a real breakthrough will be made with the new foil and speeds over 60 knots will be reached in the next two months. They will be the first to acknowledge that whilst the team is confident... they haven't done it yet.

This is THE boat - the one that my sense as a high speed sailor and that of EVERY engineer I know who has examined the design believes will not only eventually set the record but will do so at a level that will remain unbeaten for years to come. The idea of ventilated foils to relieve cavitation pressure - the wall - has merit. I have hit the wall myself at 35 knots on my Trifoiler - smaller foils would allow me to go faster but there still is a wall - ventilating the foils removes the wall.

0:09 is the price. Paul - glad your efforts paid off. Boldness comes in many forms, from extreme climbing, to solo-sailing, to base-jumping. Breaking 60kts will be your extreme effort.

59 knot average in about 26 knots of breeze today, with peaks in the 60's. That's 70+ mph. Wow.

Peak speed of 54.4 knots, in what wind speed? Very curious.

I really want this project to succeed and wipe the kite-boarding smiles off their smug little selfs
