Eton Grundig G5 AM FM Stereo Shortwave SSB Portable Radio Review

The Eton Grundig G5 AM FM Shortwave SSB portable radio is still ticking to this day. An amazing radio with an amazingly bad coating :)

A radio that performs very well on all of its bands. I would recommend looking into the newer Eton Executive Satellit, no scary rubber coating to gum things up.

Features I like about this radio:
FM Reception is very good.
The Shortwave bands are fun to explore.
Single Side Band...nuff said.
AM reception is fantastic during the day and night.
FM Stereo.
Speaker audio is good.
Headphone audio is excellent.
36" whip antenna.
700 Presets.

Overall this radio is great except for the rubberized coating that they saw fit to spray on it. It becomes a sticky mess and is not a joy to remove. With that said, if you can handle the "tar" then pick one up. A good used price should be under $50. Otherwise I recommend the Eton Satellit as an alternative.

Nice review. I still have my G3 and other than the sync on it and the backlit keys on the G5 they're identical.
I keep it as my travel radio, works like a champ.

Guess who recently bought the E3? What a turkey! Glad that I didn't pay the full price for it. I read somewhere that the E5 is the same internally, as the DE/KA 1003 but with a different layout .

Hi Todderbert. I have the G5 and the G3. Got both from Universal Radio. I can't find the original adapter for the G3 (my G5 adapter quit so it's using the adapter from the G3). Can you recommend a good aftermarket adapter that would work? Preferably a universal adapter that can be switched to other radios with the use of changeable tips? If you can't suggest any I understand. Maybe one of your viewers knows.

My G5 was purchased around 2009-2010 and has been in service almost continually since then with a brief hiatus while I used the G3. It has better filtering but glitchy buttons and more complex so I switched back to the G5. It's always on as in 24/7. Can't do SW or SSB where I live now but the G5 was great at pulling in distant signals.

The radio looks like a cross between the Eton Satellit and the Kaito/Degen 1103 fortunately it has a dedicated volume control unlike the 1103 and has much better AM reception than your Satellit.
