Flew into Calgary recently and stopped in at The Camera Store. Nice to visit a brick and mortar camera store again. Lots of gear and nice knowledgeable folks. I currently use a Gitzo tripod, which I've had for 20 years, with a RRS head when I'm home. When I travel I use a Leofoto. It's carbon fiber, fits in my checked bag with a RRS head attached, doesn't have a center column, and comes up to eye level.

I love using tripods for studio photography. They have 2 huge advantages for me. It allows me to interact with my clients better. My head isn't stuck behind the camera and secondly, it slows my shooting down, allowing me to think more, check my settings and get the shot I need. Then after, I can just take the camera off and just play around. then put the camera back when I want to check everything.

Also, a L mount is great, for portrait work, it just makes changing from portrait to landscape much easer and is more stable then moving the ball head.

Great info. I am looking to buy a tripod and I was thinking about buying an aluminum tripod because I didn't care that much about the weight difference. But after seeing the advantage of carbon tripod on cold weather and vibration I changed my mind. Thanks for the info

I wouldn't buy a manfrotto ball head because they have their own plate. It is not arca swiss compatible. That is a huge factor imho. You are not able to use a ton of 3rd party plates, or cages etc.

Back in the film days you needed a tripod often, with digital - clean higher ISO and Image stabilization I almost never use one outdoors. In the studio, yes a tripod is used much of the time.

Good advice on the ball head supporting at least twice the weight of camera-lens.

For tripods, agree carbon fiber is better, esp in cold weather. Have both lever and twist legs and I do prefer levers. That said, I have mostly moved away from tripods and tend to go handheld, or monopod in place of a tripod...in fact, got the brand/model Jordan uses (except shorter bcs am not his height...grin).

Manfrotto tripods could well be the best in the world, but their decision to use a specific Manfrotto plate rather then making them arca-swiss compatible makes them unbuyable

Hello Both, Tripods the biggest pain in my world. I have four tripod the I use one that I keep in the studio, that is a big stand type at 50kg takes two to lift. I have a big old Manfrotto ART which again is big as I used it with a 5x4 camera but it does stand at a good 6 feet. can be good. The other to I have one with a gimbal head for long lenses and the last is carbon fiber with a geared that just supper for fine control.

I own Manfrotto and Gitzo tripods. I much prefer my Gitzo’s because they are much more stable. There is no wobble.

I don't like that the Gitzo tripods don't have a hook for helping to weigh it down.

Gitzo is a little pricey for my taste.

I have an 019XB, and a 3LT. I can undo both clamps at once, all twist locks at once. No significant difference.

Bin the ballheads. Very popular, not actually all that good.

I used to own a 5Ds, I now own an S1R. The latter is heavier.

What I need is MONEY for a new tripod. 🤣 For now, still using my old Manfrotto 190XProB from 2007. It's a nice tripod though. Maybe a bit shorter than I'd like but good overall.

They may be heavier but buy a tripod that will raise to eye level...Much easier to deal with..I'm a birds in flight shooter so I'm mainly a monopod user or just handhold

lately, or even throw the last decade to be honest, I utilize tripods less and less, as those become redundant for so many shooting genre, due to advance in cameras and lenses, e.g. nowadays is possible to shoot at 1/15sec with 500mm lens, and actually achieving reasonable percentage of sharp images.
