Optimising Vs Satisficing

In this video, I talk about two concepts—one that’s getting a lot of attention right now and another that’s just as relevant but often overlooked.

Optimizing – tracking every detail, measuring progress down to the last rep. Satisficing – doing enough to stay active without obsessing over the numbers.

With fitness trends pushing for constant tracking—wearables, apps, and endless data—are we making it harder for members to engage? Or is a “daily-ish” approach actually more sustainable?

Reminds me of the "motivation" model of Ryan & Deci. Satisficing touches on intrinsic motivation. Just because it's nice. Optimising tends towards extrinsic motivation as a driver for personal ambitions. Interesting. Thank you!

Really useful concept! I think that if this concept was the driving cultural force behind exercise, it would be much more attractive to many more people and the net result would be a healthier population. Although I think it needs a catchier name so it coud be propagandized. Maybe "exercise balance" or "moderation" or something.

Plus it's really a sign of the times seeing a person such as yourself taling about how they like to scroll. Not critizing, it's just funny because for most of my life, an older, more experienced person would always be the one judging and scolding young people for too much useless technology use. Now no one is immune to the *SCROLL* .
