Drill And Tip For Hitting Sharp Cross

Here's a drill and tip to help train hitting sharp cross!

We're working on the angle and turning more into the ball as opposed to away from the ball that a lot of athletes do (even hitting cross). This is for optimal transfer of force into the ball while hitting these angles, deception is a different story. This drill can be great to help teach that pattern and improve the ability to hit these well and with some pace (aside from other things that matter like contact point height and angles available).

When you only have a ball and a wall, this is great to work on hitting angles while still hitting toward the wall. We're imagining the line is the net, and if you want to work on sharp cross then ideally the line is 90 degrees to the wall you're hitting at. Then you position yourself so you face cross court in relation to this line, toss, and try to hit over the line toward the wall. We can work other angles as well, just by practicing the positioning and spiking motion to contact the ball in a way that makes it hit the wall.

If you don't have a line you can set up a piece of tape to act as the net. And it's a good idea to have a strong technical foundation before getting to something like this. If you have access to a net and multiple balls then you can work on it by standing on a box that's ideally your jump height and hitting off a self-toss, over and over. The point is to work on the skill without being in the air to start. Of course, it does take time and you'll still need to practice it in the air, but this will help it become more automatic when hitting airborne. Also keep in mind that you should mark out 9 meters in width (simulating the width of the court) to give you a reference if your hits are in or out. Standing hits will be different, and this line=net isn't perfect, I could be more back to not hit "the net", but it's still good to have a reference and way to practice if you don't have a net.

A lot to it! Hope this helps.
Let's keep working 📈
