hi Streaky, can you give us some audio example of Glue with the UAD SSL g bus and the Tegeler Creme ?

i.e: it's best to compress gently at various stages rather than too much in a single stage. And if the mix is tight, often no compression is needed at the mastering stage.
The transfer curve (input vs output) of compression ratios accumulates in a non-linear fashion, as a product of the total, not the sum. (e.g: a 2:1 + 3:1 + 2:1 ratio ≠ 7:1, but an equivalent of 12:1).
If using master buss compression in mixing it's vital to mix and monitor *via* it early on, not add it on after the fact. Just as with mixing to tape: you monitor the output of the machine. You don't simply create a mix, add something to it, then put up with the alteration. Rather, it's a holistic process.
Also key: everything's done with *intent*, not because you can.

I use 1 compressor preferably a VCA type compressor to glue the tracks together before I go to mastering

Mixing:

Usually SSL style compressor, usually 10-30ms, release 0.1-0.3 (or auto), ratio usually 4:1, HPF SC (80-150)... Up to 4db GR max

But lately I started to experiment with shorter attack times, like 1-3 ms, and I think I dig it, with HPF SC engaged quite high (100-150) it doesn't destroy the low punch, but tightens up busy mixes with lots of tracks.

Cheers

Everything is super, only there is no specifics. Really, something can be understood only with examples! It would be great to hear them from such a great master!

have you tried "the glue" from cytomic ? it's super good!

For me I just always get a bit muddled up with the settings I should be applying, when I compress my leads I usually have an attack of around 3, ratio 4:1 and release fairly quick as I don’t want it to be taking ages to return to its normal state, does that sound on the right path?

I have found that a 4:1 ratio on about -1 dB worth of gain reduction 10 -30 ms attack with the auto release. That’s about how I usually set things up. Don’t really like cereal compression on the master. I think it’s easy to pump and smash with more then one. If the settings don’t work for you, there just might be something in the mix that could be better!

The Reason SSL-style bus comp was the process that made my mixes start to sound 'like a record' and enjoyable to 'mix into.' It's quite a diffuse compression that pulls in the sides a bit IMO. Lately I'm using the Elysia Xpressor hardware for glueing the mix OTB and it comes close to the SSL-style glue (minus a bit of snap) but lots of extra features: wet/dry/HPF, etc.

We know what glueing a mix means Streaky lol

Hi streaky. What if only the low frequency trigger the bus comp?

Much blah blah blah and it shows nothing. Record the screen with the plugin!

Talking about compression is a bit silly without demonstrating how it affects audio sir.
