Russia's war against Ukraine has prompted Germany to beef up the country's long-constrained military, including expanding the Navy's capabilities. One of their roles is supporting allies across the world. Now, two German vessels are heading to the South China Sea. DW's Washington Bureau Chief Ines Pohl spent a few days on board.

This video reminds of a legendary German battleship called Bismarck made by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg during the Second World War. Definitely one of the finest during its time.

In 1913, British shipbuilding industry had 69% of global output. Last year Chinese reached 50%, this year projected be 54%. Time for Germany to show off naval capability again.

The enforcement of UNCLOS is everybody's responsibility, including Germany 🇩🇪 because it's an international law.

The Germans want to uphold ‘peace’ and ‘stability’ thousands of miles away from their homeland while simultaneously failing to do so in their own backyard. What a brave show of their commitment to fostering a harmonious global environment. I am stunned.

Bravo Germany for participating in making sure there is freedom of navigation in the Indonesia-Pacific!

I suppose this will increase long distance naval skills, but Germany needs to dramatically ramp up its army and airforce as its 1st priority.

In Germany's backyard, the Nord Stream pipeline, once the lifeblood of energy, was vandalized, and the government dared not even investigate who destroyed it. While maintaining "peace" thousands of kilometers away from Germany in the ocean, I am sure that the Germans must be a model for the Western world, a good model for the world.🤣

*The international law* is very clear on the South China Sea:
- parts of it belong to some ASEAN countries,
- the rest of it is the international water,
- no part of it belongs to China🇨🇳 or Taiwan🇹🇼.
