This is the first of four lectures from Dominic Joyce's 3rd Year Geometry of Surfaces course. The four lectures cover topological surfaces and conclude with a big result, namely the classification of surfaces. This lecture provides an introduction to the course and to topological surfaces. You can watch all 4 lectures here:

All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.

The ideas underlying topology go back to Gottfried Leibniz, who in the 17th century envisioned the geometria situs and analysis situs. Leonhard Euler's Seven Bridges of Königsberg problem and polyhedron formula are arguably the field's first theorems. The term topology was introduced by Johann Benedict Listing in the 19th century, although it was not until the first decades of the 20th century that the idea of a topological space was developed.

Believe or not but I have to use geometry surfaces for the type of work I do
