The Role of the RIGHT HIP (Trail Hip) in the Golf Swing

preview_player
Показать описание
The Role of the Right Hip (Trail Hip) is vitally important for building and powerful and efficient golf swing. Too often, we see club golfers either move their trail hip poorly or hardly at all. This leads to inconsistency and a lack of clubhead speed and in some cases, injury! In fact, the movement of the trail hip can affect at least 14 different key aspects of the golf swing.

Glen Haynes explains and demonstrates the importance of the effective motion of the trail hip in both the backswing and downswing. He goes through the 14 different aspects of the golf swing, which can be directly affected by these movements.

Ideally, the trail hip (right hip for right-handed golfers) rotates behind you in the backswing, with hips turning about 50° away from the golf ball. From there, the trail hip can fire towards the target. By moving the trail hip in this powerful manner, several aspects of the golf swing and performance can be improved.

Golf Coaches, Not Teachers

The Aussie Golf Pros are holistic coaches in every sense of the word. Steve and Glen are both fully qualified members of the PGA of Australia and are avid students of the Sports Sciences. Together, they are certified in Advanced Golf Coaching, Golf Psychology, TPI (Body-Swing Connection), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Personal Development and Skill Acquisition.

Steve and Glen are not ‘Method’ coaches. They recognise that there are literally 1000’s of ways to swing a golf club! Rather than try to ‘change’ your swing, their goal is to help You Be The Best Golfer You Can Be!

Skill Development vs Technical Changes

Although technique is an important factor in improving a golfer’s performance, Skill Development is largely neglected in golf coaching today. Skill is something that can be tangibly improved with proper understanding of the golf impact laws and effective practice towards improved performance.

External Focus of Attention

Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common suggestions might include increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These are all factors of the golf swing, which many golfers and teachers consider important. However, as they are focused internally, on movements of the body, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.

Excellent instructional video. I truly believe you are spot on with the hip rotation being the key to a successful swing movement. When I execute the proper hip rotation, my hits are longer and straighter. If I don’t execute it, my swing turns into an arms only move, with an open or closed club face. At 75, the “Easiest Swing” method allows me to enjoy my game. Thanks for posting this video.👍🇨🇦👨‍🦳👏

Your stick drill demonstrates clearly to me to start my downswing by firing my lead hip which then turns my trail hip towards my target automatically. The lead hip firing on the downswing provides the sling shot explosive power for the 1/3 rd second of the downswing.

Don’t take my word for this: Bobby Jones said this years ago and no other golf instructor has said it since. But remember you heard it from me. Cheers. 😊🥂👍

Thanks Aussie Golf Pros. All these years I've been working on eliminating the fat shots and it was one little move that changed everything. Getting that right hip to go back instead of sliding. It made transferring the weight or ground force to the left side way way easier and in time. I always hear analysts talk about how the pros are already getting their weight over before they even finish their backswing and now I know how they do it efficiently and effectively with little effort.

Excellent demonstration Glen on the effective use of the right hip in the golf swing! I like your suggestion of turning the right hip back, loading into the right instep, and then firing the hip toward the target and at the same time pushing off of the right instep, All 14 tips are extremely valuable in having an effective golf swing. I will definitely be archiving this video and using your suggestions to better my golf game. Good Job Glen!

Point 4 is a great shout, great lesson thanks. I've been doing this for a while now and the power is incredible when you swing the club this way the swoosh is so much louder which says it all really. The trouble I'm having is sequencing this so it's still work in progress!

Excellent video! Lots of condensed information. Really appreciate the stick-drill demo AND the mention that the hips start the downswing.

Great video. Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly we want the trail hip to rotate around so it’s facing the target in the backswing? This seems to automatically recenter my swing and gives my arms tons of room to swing through to the target.

Good and useful tips, it covered almost all aspect needed in golf-
My question: is the trail hip move straight back or move back around?

Look at Dr. Kwon's demonstration of the backswing and especially how the right hip goes into/over (sway?) the right leg and then the push upwards from the leg causes the hip to turn up and around. He advocates small lateral hip moves but maintaining a cone shapped upper torso.

I kind of came about this by accident.... when I was flushing my 5 irons, I noticed that I did so when I concentrated on the right hip coming thru... if the right hip comes thru, the left hip has to go back... and I got decent club head speed with right hip coming thru. Then I tried it with driver and same thing.

Hi Glenn. May i respectfully say that Ben Hogan maintained that correct trail hip depth is automatically achieved by a full shoulder turn. In other words the golfer should not need to " actively" pursue trail hip depth. Would appreciate your thoughts.

I would like to comment and would like to know your opinion. (I know everyone has their own swing etc) What I have come to conclusion is that for me when I use my right trailing side (yes also hip) towards the target as if I greet the target, my swing has produced great consistency. I used to have more leading hip for downswing initiation (yes also great results but not so consistent and efficient) and I believe it is more manipulated swing (bump, press the left foot etc) than when I use the trailing side and just swing through. My trailing foot does also not stay too long on the ground.
