The Garden of Words (Japanese:Kotonoha no Niwa) is a 2013 Japanese anime drama film written, directed, and edited by Makoto Shinkai, produced by Toho and animated by CoMix Wave Films. It stars Miyu Irino and Kana Hanazawa, and Daisuke Kashiwa composed the music instead of Tenmon, who had done so for many of Shinkai's previous films. Senri Oe wrote and performed the theme song "Rain" in 1988, but it was remade for the film and sung by Motohiro Hata. In the same year as the film, the film was adapted into a manga with illustrations by Midori Motohashi, and later novelized by Shinkai.
Takao Akizuki, a 15-year-old aspiring shoemaker, and Yukari Yukino, a mysterious 27-year-old woman he keeps meeting at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden on rainy mornings, are central to the story. Takao skips his morning class to design shoes, while Yukari avoids work due to personal issues in her professional life. Takao shares his passion for shoes by offering to make a pair for Yukari, while Yukari shares nothing about herself, including her name. When Takao discovers Yukari's identity, emotions flare as both realize they have been teaching each other "how to walk." Shinkai wrote the story as a tale of "lonely sadness," based on the meaning of the traditional Japanese word for "love," and uses shoes as a metaphor for life. Rain, Man'ysh poetry, and the Japanese garden are all motifs in the story. According to Shinkai, the age difference between the two main characters and their character traits demonstrate how awkwardly and disjointedly people mature, with even adults feeling no more mature than teenagers at times.
