it almost feels like every hip hop artist has fallen off commercially or have trouble gaining commercial success but artist like Cole and Kendrick will always sell because of the way they make albums. even if the numbers take a while to sell they'll still sell successfully because of there longevity. Drake on the other hand can drop mid albums but as long as he has hits and features he can rely on he'll always be the best selling hip hop artist.

At the age of 20, I find myself equally drawn to both Drake and Kanye music. While Drake albums may not be the best, his ability to craft compelling and enjoyable music is undeniable. I think it said alot when Drake said "ever summer I gotta give you shit" at one of his shows. He's been so dominant for so long, trending for so long that he can't allow himself to sit back and take a break.

It would be a nightmare to Drake if he didn't have the biggest records/albums that got bumped in clubs all summer. He wouldn't be able to sleep at night if Kanye or Travis had the biggest songs of the year while he sat back quiet. He always has to trend, he always has to be relevant.

If he took time off I think people would come back but I don't see the same intensity of hype around it. For Kendrick, I'll assume he waited to give us something worthwhile. Drake's output is his strength. He'll have a lot of filler songs on his album that make listening through a chore, but you go through the year and there'll always be some Drake song popping, keeping him in the back of your mind. I would be curious to see if he'd changed, but I wouldn't stay long if the first few songs suggested otherwise.

I think Drake could take 3 year break and he would be met with anticipation. I feel like it would be different if he was using his same formula and no one is checking for him. But even his “eh” projects all have something ppl still vibe with. Everyone is still cares about him they just may not be comfortable with all his switch ups.
