I think worship today is different than worship in those contexts. Worship of this idol Baal were atrocious in violence and oppression to those who serve that cult. It's not just "who do you believe is real" that determines death in this context, it's a whole list of evil these priests were perpetuating against these worshipers that they are being executed. The priests were executed, not the former worshipers of Baal. I sincerely appreciate the point Chris made that the fire fell on the sacrifice, not the people!! Jesus takes our place and also gives us freedom from the things and systems that oppress and seek our destruction!

At first I thought maybe the part about going at them with the edge of the sword referred to use of the Word, like how Jesus has a sword from his mouth that is the Word of God, and perhaps the word slaughtered was added as a negative term for Elijah taking it literally, but this explanation sounds good too. I think I’m inclined to look for other meanings behind the death-punishments mentioned in the Old Testament, since Jesus and the Commandments say thou shalt not murder which seems contradictory to the other parts promoting violence. Idk, I’m still learning

Amen! This is a dichotomous universe. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. And when Christ reminded his disciples that Elijah had indeed come as prophecy had told, and that they had done to him whatever they wished, we have to wonder if the beheading of John the Baptist wasn't merely Elijah's karma catching up with him.

But I still wonder why people who rejected the true God, would care about their own sin? False gods like ba'al don't require repentance, of course they don't talk or exist but the verses imply that the prophets were aware of the concept.✝

Moses and Elijah both didn't finish their commission- they were so overwhelmed and then asked God to kill them. Moses died but God hid the body of Moses from he who had the power of death and hell- Satan! Elijah was taken up into heaven in a whirlwind. It is appointed to man, once to die and then judgment!
