Bird Nesting in Vent

We get many calls during the Spring to remove birds or squirrels from the inside of bathroom, stove and dryer vent pipes. This particular customer was shocked to discover a bird flying around inside the living space of the home. Puzzled by how it got in, they soon discovered that the bird had entered the home through a tear in the flexible dryer vent pipe inside the closet. After some rather frantic efforts, they managed to chase the bird out the front door. Not knowing when he would get an appointment with us, he secured the outside vent opening to prevent the bird from getting back in.

The homeowner was unaware of the fact that there was a nest and eggs behind the dryer inside the closet. Unfortunately by the time we arrived, the eggs in the nest were cold to the touch and did not survived because the mother bird was unable to keep them warm.

Statistics show that clogged dryer vents are the number one cause of house fires. It is very important to have your dryer vent inspected often and if required, have the lint cleaned out. It is also important to remove the lint from the dryer filter after each laundry load to prevent build up in the vent pipe.

This video was taken in May of this year.

It breaks my heart that you have not yet found a good solution for birds.

I am GRATEFUL that you even take the time to address the issue, from the perspective of homeowner responsibility.

How do you not notice a bird nest being built inside your home?

Starlings are the worse! I had nests every year in my attic and not sure how they got in. It stopped when the house was stuccoed. I'd find the starling flying around inside my house! I also had one in my dryer. He got stuck and couldn't get out after flying through the dryer vent hose. Had to carry the entire dryer outside to free him. Crazy birds!!

To everyone wondering what happened to the eggs, read the description of the video. The eggs unfortunately did not make it.

I had starlings living in my stove vent for several years. I loved listening to the different noises they made. But, I needed to get a new microwave over the stove, so I had to have them evicted. When they were not using the nest. They tried to get back in through the wire for a bit. Not anymore though.

Yeah, that's not a fire hazard or anything... How in the hell was the bird able to build that nest without anyone noticing? It's huge!

Were the babies dead or did you give them to a place where they could be born?
