If you want a Permanent Commission from the beginning and want to be a fighter pilot, CDS is your only option. If you want to serve on a Short Service Commission in either the Flying Branch or a Ground Duty(Tech or Non-Tech) Branch, AFCAT is for you.

Before 2017
AFCAT exam was introduced so that officer's kids who could not qualify written test of CDS... could qualify AFCAT with the help of Air Force examiners (after the exam).

After 2017, when the exam became online then things have changed.

But still SSB interview is in the hands of colleagues of Officers.
