10 Best Free Things to Do in London

London is an expensive city, but being a tourist doesn't have to break your wallet. Here are 10 free or really cheap attractions in London! The first is the Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace. It's the quintessential London Experience -- make sure you get there an hour early, and wait until at least 1134 when the main gates open!
2. Royal Parks
- London has tons of parks that used to only be open to the royal family, but now you can enjoy them just like the kings and queens did!
3. Sky Garden Observatory
- Get a birds eye view of London from this free Observatory on top of the "Walkie Talkie" building. Make a reservation in advance!
4. Walk along the South Bank of the Thames
- Known as the Queen's Walk, walking along the South Bank is one of my favorite things to do in London.
5. Watch Street Performers at Covent Garden Market
- Out in front of Covent Garden Market there always seems to be some street performers, and when one is done, another one comes out!
6. Picadilly Circus
- London's equivalent of Times Square, bright lights and big signs!
7. Tate Modern Museum
- Another great view of London, and some very "interesting" art
8. Go Window Shopping at London's Department Stores
- Particularly on Oxford Street, and at Harrod's, London's department stores always have really neat window displays
9. Rent a Santander Bicycle
- Ok, so it costs 2 GBP, but it's almost free!
10. Ride a Double Decker Bus
- Skip the really expensive hop on hop off busses, and go up to the 2nd deck at the front and see another neat perspective on London. Only 1.50 GBP

A couple of things from a Londoner...

Firstly, well done on this. Especially for the Walkie Talkie recommendation. It has the best sunset London has to offer.
1. In addition to the 4 and 88 bus routes, I’d recommend the 11. It goes from St Paul’s Cathedral, along Fleet Street & the Strand, past Nelson’s Column, Downing St, Big Ben and Kings Road.
2. It’s free to go to the Houses of Parliament. You will have to go through security but you can then wander round the public bits, watch a debate or committee hearing etc,
3. Throughout Britain, all national museums and galleries are free, and a lot of them are in a London. The best, IMHO, are the Science Museum (nearest tube is South Kensington), the Museum of Childhood (Bethnal Green), Tate Britain (Pimlico) and the British Museum (Museum).

If you do the walk along the south bank of the thames, I would recommend walking a bit further on east from tower bridge. It is a lot less touristy and really quaint and pretty with some great pubs!

As a Londoner, I was glad to hear you emphasise the risk of bag-theft or pick pocketing. However, it is most certainly not confined to Buckingham Palace; Oxford Street is probably the worst area, frequented by gangs from Romania (you'll see them, resting at Marble Arch!); the street beggars are also organised in gangs. I'm proud of this city, but please be vigilant :)

I didn't know about the Sky Garden Observatory! It seems gorgeous, I'll definitely go there next time I go to London! :)
I would personally have added the British Museum and the National Gallery to this top, they're both great and free!

Check out opening times for national museums and galleries as some are open later in the evenings on odd days in the week up to 9 pm. And they're often quieter. Also, check out the British Library near Euston station.

Great list! I never heard of the Sky Garden Observatory. As I love great overlooks, I will definitely have to check that out on a future trip. I think someone else mentioned it in the comments, but I also recommend checking out the British Museum. There is so much to see inside the museum (I spent 1-2 hours there during my last trip to London but you could spend even more time in there), and it is absolutely free!

I did most of these when I was in London 2 weeks ago, and I'd like to add Camden Town to this list, it's a great eclectic area with lots of great shops and cafes

Where in the World can you see the Sunflowers by Van Gogh or The Haywain by Constable for free?
The National Gallery, adjacent to Trafalgar Square that's where! Not just these 2 either - Hundreds of great paintings from around the world! Bonus - The National Portrait Gallery is next door and that has 100s of great paintings as well.

Great video. Enjoyed it. The 'Tate Modern' is an art gallery and not a museum. You did not mention the actual Museums like The Bitish Museum, The VA, Natural History etc as they are all free. Perhaps cover them in another video. Must mention the Globe Theatre which is not free but only £5.00 to stand and seeing a play there is amazing and standing is the best place to see the performance. Love your style and editing etc. Keep going. Great stuff.
