TOTAL WAR: Rome vs Carthage the First Punic War

Показать описание
In the third century BC, a clash which had been brewing for centuries finally erupted: Rome, the ruthless imperialist upstart dominating Italy, against Carthage, the ancient but sinister apex predator of the Mediterranean. The conflict sparked in Messina in 263 BC, and went on for over two decades, as the fortunes of both powers rose and fell. Rome’s superior, land-based army proved the perfect match to the Carthaginians’ maritime might, though both forces rapidly adapted to the expertise of their foe. By 250 BC, Carthage was embattled and flailing, and in need of a hero, to restore the fate of Carthage, and ensure her survival…
Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the outbreak of the First Punic War, in which history’s greatest rivalry, Rome vs Carthage, finally came to blows. As the established power of Carthage was challenged by the rise of a new contender in Rome, but could either live in a world where the other survived?

The history sector on YouTube has been inundated with soulless and highly inaccurate AI channels. This is perfectly paced and riveting. Thanks.

The Rest is History is my favorite podcast and I try to turn on all of my friends to it. You make learning history most enjoyable and entertaining. I wish that you had been my college professors 40 years ago!

Hey loved the video, my father put me on to it. I have had a great interest for many years in Hannibal Barca with the only things I knew about his father being that he fought in the first Punic war, made Hannibal make that vow and that he was a general in Spain, so I found all of this information on the first war as well and Hamilcar as well as the context it gives to Hannibal's war very fascinating so thank you.

Lads the school glee with which you discuss these historical events both brings them to life but also conveys your passion for The sooner we hear your description of Hannibal in Italy the better.... Especial looking forward to the way you describe the great defeats of the Roman armies by Hannibal and also the tactics of Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus in his cunning tactical opposition of Hannibal

These a brief and entertaining sweeps of history. If you want that kind of scholarly minutiae and analysis, read a book!

Great mention of the Battle of Midway. To me, the most interesting battle of WWII, certainly of the Pacific theater....

Love the channel, but find there are several skips, and rewinds in the podcast version. That was true for the end of the 70’s British politics series (which the final episodes were not included on YT) and this Carthage series. Would love to see some tighter editing. I love it so much just don’t want to miss anything.

If I get another cat I’m going to call him Xanthapuss.
