SOMM takes the viewer on a humorous, emotional and illuminating look into a mysterious world—the Court of Master Sommeliers and the massively intimidating Master Sommelier Exam. The Court of Master Sommeliers is one of the world's most prestigious, secretive, and exclusive organizations. Since its inception almost 40 years ago, less than 200 candidates have reached the exalted Master level. The exam covers literally every nuance of the world of wine, spirits and cigars. Those who have passed have put at risk their personal lives, their well-being, and often their sanity to pull it off. Shrouded in secrecy, access to the Court Of Master Sommeliers has always been strictly regulated, and cameras have never been allowed anywhere near the exam, until now. How much do you think you know about wine? SOMM will make you think again.

Lol at the comments below. To be a master of anything is quite an achievement. Dedicating all of those hours to develop that amount of knowledge is incredible. Why not strive to become a master of your passion? I don't see the harm in that. I know I'd rather spend 10000 hours to be a master of something that'd take me all over the world, experiencing different wines with different foods and meeting people who are so passionate about it all. Whether it be wine/food or even music/art. Better than a lot of professions this world has to offer. I don't see how this documentary could be anything other than inspiring for anyone who has a passion. Whether you enjoy wine or not.

This is FANTASTIC documentary.
I have worked in the Wine industry. The world wine is all about bringing pleasure to people. Whether it be $10 or $1000 bottle of wine. Sommeliers I believe are the Jedi to the world of wine.

Even if you are not a wine person, I recommend to anyone. We all have passions and obsession.

This is a fantastic movie. I was studying for the chartered financial analyst (cfa) exam and was recommended this documentary as they are both exams with extremely low pass rates with a lot of studying. Being able to empathise for the students and understand the range of emotions they go through preparing for this exam, self-doubt, grit, both good and bad days make this a great watch.

This film to me isn't just about wine and becoming a master of it. But instead, to become a master of what you are most passionate about and put hard work into that passion. I used this film as inspiration to getting into medical school, and here I am. I will only continue to work hard to be the best physician I can be.

Ah, the experienced palate, brilliant "Taste" & "Aromas" memory, the acumen for academic wine knowledge from grape to bottle, and the poise, perfection, and professionalism in serving wine. It's all about the highest level of expertise & appreciation. Bravo! to all who become Master Sommeliers!

How can anyone criticize an institution for learning more about wine cigars and coffee? I'm with "Charles Carron Brown" - their loss, I guess.

Much respect Sommeliers - this film has inspired me to start a new hobby, learning the art of the somm - I'm starting with a 5 week intro course and taking it from there... you guys should be proud of your skill - a deep appreciation and understanding of the finer things.

Simplemente bello! ver como estos jovenes entrenan sus sentidos, dedican su tiempo y sus energias para alcanzar el rango de MS o maestro Sommelier. Amantes del vino y luchadores. Una experiencia enriquecedora ver esto!!

Absolutely amazing! I'm astonished, fascinated, and in awe at the level of knowledge it takes to master this skill. Such a great respect for the men and women who have trained themselves in order to help me choose a suitable wine to pare with my meal. I LOVE IT!

It's a style of wine that comes from Portugal that has its fermentation stopped early by the addition of pure alcohol, which serves to both maintain a high sugar level and raise the overall alcohol content to around 20%. They are most often consumed with cheeses or rich desserts :)

Wether or not you think this is bullshit, can you not appreciate their hard work?

I have often thought through the years (usually just in the background) that I would love to travel the path to becoming a Master Sommelier. Naturally, I can't wait to see this.

I don't even drink and think it's a art and skill and wish I could do it

Well said Drew, I couldn't agree with you more. Being a Sommelier myself I know how it feels to be looked upon with a certain sense of oddity, but what we do mate, we do for the shear love of it. If people don't get that... well, that's their loss then I suppose isn't it?

Are you kidding me?! Once they pass the exam these guys are guaranteed job security for life. The average STARTING salary is over 100k. Plus the recognition of succeeding at something with a less that 3% pass rate is amazing and the dedication required should be respected. What have you done that has ever even come close to anything of that magnitude? Sour grapes bro.
