Do you learn things the hard way? Me too. Watch this. | Mel Robbins

2020 has been a year of lessons and some of the ones I’ve been learning more recently are real doozies.

You’ll always hear me say, “Look for the message in the mess.” When you can find the message it will help you clean up and move past any mess you find yourself stepping in.

I tend to learn by experience-- AKA the hard way. My 83 year old mother-in-law calls this “stepping in 💩.” I stepped in a couple big piles this year and what I found is the harder the lesson, the more valuable it is.

So I want you to stop beating yourself up, pull up your big girl panties, and move forward. Whatever it is that happened or didn’t happen, it taught you something you needed to learn.

One of my biggest lessons this year is that if you keep ignoring the sh*t that’s bothering you, it doesn’t disappear-- it gets bigger. 2021 will be the year I stop letting things slide.

I highly recommend reading the book “Powerful” by Patty McCord. She was one of the cofounders of Netflix and it was a real wake up call for me. Thank you @BrendonBurchard for recommending it. I’ll be using it not only as a CEO but in absolutely every aspect of my life.

What’s something you learned the hard way in 2020? And what are you going to do differently in 2021? Tell me below ⬇️

I really like how you asserted yourself in saying it’s not your poo. Sometimes as an empath, or a nurturer, or just somebody who wants to see the good in people you do step in the poo. And it makes it harder to avoid it if you are really revictimize yourself or allowing other people to. When you don’t feel like you can trust yourself or your own judgment, those mistakes get easier to make. Watch out for the shit, and do your best to avoid it but don’t take accountability for it. ❤️

Also, the more shit you step in the better you get at cleaning it off your shoe. I noticed that all the challenges in my life, a.k.a. the shit I’ve stepped into, has brought me to the place I am today, and I love the freedom and joy and happiness that all that shit has caused me. I see each pile of crap as an opportunity to grow and that perception has served me well.

MEL, I love your videos and I am confident they are transforming many lives. Thank you for sharing your perception with the world so they can learn to walk around the shit and forgive themselves for stepping in it🙏🏻🌻💕

To learn is to grow. Increase your value by continuing to learn and grow. That is why it is said “ Experience is the best teacher”.

The road to success is littered with obstacles. While others give up and turn around, you push your way through. Happy New Year to you Mel & your family!

Haha great analogy! Sometimes stepping in shit is unavoidable – just clean it up and keep going!

This is good. I often step in it myself. The bit about obsessing about who made the mess really spoke to me. I do have a habit of doing that, and it gets in the way of just solving the problem and moving on.

Growth happens where the challenge is.
Doesn't matter who created it, if has to be solved and it fell in your lap, so get it done and learn from the experience. That a good way to guarantee that situation is less likely to happen again.

🤣🤣🤣 This is such a hilarious metaphor..!! 🙏🙏🙏 And pretty damn timely as someone did take a dump (metaphorical!) on my doorstep yesterday and i did indeed step in it. Took me ages to clean it up - in fact, i'm still trying to get the stench out... Great advice as always, and delivered with a laugh. I needed that - thanks Mel and your MIL! ('Mel & Mil' - can this be a new series please? 😆)
😊😊😊
