UNESCO's World Heritage Sites: Protecting the world's treasures

For nearly 50 years the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has listed outstanding natural and man-made sites as culturally significant locations worthy of protection. But what does designation as a World Heritage Site actually mean for a glacier or coral reef, or a landmark like the Taj Mahal? Correspondent Conor Knighton treks for answers.

this is such a fascinating video! i really appreciate how it highlights the importance of preserving our world heritage sites. however, i can't help but wonder if sometimes the push for preservation actually restricts the local communities that depend on those sites for their livelihood. it seems like a tricky balance between conservation and community needs, don’t you think?

This doesn’t work for sacred land sites such as Stonehenge which is no longer free and has a large gift shop. The plans for Glastonbury Tor will be worse and restrict in so many ways.

This vid didn't even mention 'how' UNESCO protects? Theses places were already grand, wonderful and unique prior to the intervention of UNESCO. I've been fortunate to visit, see and touch many of these places, and I didn't require the promotion of UNESCO to visit them. Good for the US, that's another offshore account that they don't have to fund.

UNESCO’s Dr. Rössler and this video fail to mention a few key items about UNESCO removing Dresden’s status.
1. The city sits in a valley and only has a few key bridges. Furthermore, the city’s largest hospital sits across directly across from the bridge. The bridge actually saves lives.
2. The city voted overwhelmingly to approve the bridge knowing the bureaucrats at UNESCO would remove their status.
While UNESCO has its benefits, its worldview is far too dichotomic.

So they need to manage the Rio grande area between the US and mexico....because there are many endangered animals that live there and migrate across the river.

UNESCO has to also be under the watchful eyes of legal UN and British Monarchy for the fact that Commonwealth Law dictates that reality when in combination with the International Human Rights Court, so abuses of powers do not become as attractive as an alcohol drink special at a club and or pub.
