The Vikings discovered America in 1, 000 AD, so Chris Columbus is a moot point.

De Blasio, since you don't feel italian anymore, refuse your name and take the one of your wife/husband. Bill Mc Cray sounds better to you?

The fact that this is even debatable is sad. Statues are symbols of historical intrigue, NOT because the people are to be revered, but because these events were pivotal and these statues bring attention to those events and influential people. It was not just revealed that Columbus was a garbage human being. Anyone who paid attention during a high school history class understands the horrible things that happened along with the good.

You want people to be curious in that spontaneous way. Sure you can go to a museum, but going to a museum isn't going to remind you of history, you're just going to see something you're there to see, but statues of all sorts are not only for interested people, but it sparks spontaneous interest, conversation, and the like. Removing all of these statues just shows liberals have no desire to preserve history.

Columbus raped pilaged the natives of San Salvador calling them "Indians" thinking he arrived in Nepal/East India in 1492. Why not honor Americo Vespucci whom this country is named for? I'm not sure if it's tradition, but I don't see the honor in an Explorer who did the King of Spain's "dirty work" for him.

...It is true that the conquest of the Americas by Europeans, which starts with Columbus, was very ugly, and involved a lot of violence. But that, for better or worse, is how history worked pretty much everywhere for thousands of years. (Though it should be noted a large portion of the deaths of Native Americans was due to disease, not violence--an inevitable consequence of Old World illness in New World soil. Europe, Asia and Africa, of course, suffered through numerous plagues of their own.).

History, in fact, is the story of conquest. We may not like it, but it’s our shared heritage. Not just Europeans, but everyone. While there is only limited knowledge of what pre-Columbus America was like, it did feature war, slavery, torture and plenty of brutality.

The point is not to excuse the worst that happened, but to understand it. And to see that it is not the essence of Columbus, but rather part of the times. With all that, there are reasons to celebrate Columbus Day.
Celebrate the spirit of exploration. It took tremendous bravery to sail off into the unknown. One of the best parts of our humanity is that sense of discovery.
Celebrate the spread of Western civilization. Lately a lot of people have been putting down Western civilization, but its spread is one of the greatest things that’s ever happened to humanity. The West has its good and bad points, but its best ideas—equal rights, freedom of religion, free speech, due process, open scientific inquiry, property rights and so on—have helped all people who adopt them. (Not that the West solely had these ideas, but it put them in a package that wasn’t generally available elsewhere.)

Indeed, the promise of the West has delivered freedom and bounty such as humanity has never known.

Why not keep the statues up but put up context. And put up Native American monuments.

The statue must be replaced by one of Barack Hussein holding a torch

Anyone who wants to change public monuments or have them removed should be charged an extra $2, 000 on their next tax return to pay for it. Done.

De Blasio is not really his name.  He is Warren Wilhelm, of German ancestry.

Columbus real birth name was Salvador Fernandes Zarco and he was the son of Dom Fernando, Duke of Beja, Alentejo and maternal grandson of João Gonçalves Zarco, discoverer of Madeira. Columbus born in Cuba, Portugal, the son of a nobleman and related to other Portuguese navigators. His real name was concealed, Christopher Columbus being a pseudonym, meaning Bearer of Christ and the Holy Spirit.

There are Court documents which confirm that Columbus's nationality was Portuguese and Columbus often uses the words "my homeland" in relation to Portugal. His wife was Portuguese too.
It is time the world knows the truth, the real truth! The man was not Italian but indeed Portuguese, his father and mother were Portuguese too as I said above.
It is very disturbing how the Italians continue to believe that Columbus was Italian all this time.
Before I forget...
Columbus did not discover America, he landed in the region by accident.
His real name was not Columbus either!
