I am confused there aren't more people looking at this process. I really like the results, I am one of those that leave their tools out in the weather. My husband tends to leave things where they lie, so we have several that would benefit from this process. thanks for the idea

Varnish on wooden tool is usually done due to import export rules saying you have to have a hard coat to keep bugs out of the wood. Linseed oil will rehydrate the wood way better and provide a better grip when your hands are sweaty.

I've had good results with just boiled linseed oil.. nothing else 😎

You might try raw linseed oil next time. The reason you may decide not to use any type of varnish is because when your hands sweat from doing hard work varnish can cause your tool to become slippery and you may lose control of it. You do not have this problem with linseed oil. Plus it is way better for preserving the wood. This is a teaching from those who deal with wooden weapons. God bless.

That handle won't last two seasons.
Tung oil three time over 2-3 weeks. Sand lightly with 180-220 after 2nd coat. Wipe off the last coating just after applying.
You might get three seasons with something as neglected as that handle was.

Also, never varnish a wooden tool handle made for landscaping and farming. That is only done by manufacturers because they are too cheap to do it right.
