I love this channel so much. Other primitive channels: "Let's dig a pool!" You: "I'm gonna sow some rice." They: "Let's build a bigger pool!" You: "I'm going to forge an axe." Don't get me wrong I love watching those videos and are amazed by their hard work, but you take it to a whole other level.

This was pretty good. Thankfully you did a process by accident that will make the axe last a bit longer by correcting other problems. This is all learning experience for you though. The first mistake you were making is not getting the iron hot enough when you went to hammer it. It was only "cherry red" which is quite cool (in terms of working temperature). Working iron at that temperature can make it become brittle and break, which is why this is normally when you would put it back into the forge to get hot again. Normally you take it out when it is glowing orange, or even a bright orange (approaching yellow). Thankfully you partially corrected this on the tail end where it was more likely to break using a process known as annealing. Annealing is when you heat the metal up to a point (for iron or steel, a dull orange color at least) then let it cool down on it's own in the air, not in water. Annealing softens the metal and makes it less brittle, it's opposite is Tempering, which hardens the metal. Tempering is when you heat the metal up really hot (bright orange, but not sparking/yellow) and dunk it into a cool liquid (commonly water).
