How Did Rashida Jones Get Handed the Keys to Toy Story?

Why did Pixar trust Rashida Jones with one of it's most beloved properties? Talent, yes, but also perseverance, creating your own path and a willingness to "throw out the worst idea in the room."

I remember when I heard there was a Toy Story 4 coming out I was annoyed. I had grown up with the franchise (just as Andy does) and felt there was nothing left to say.

My nieces were coming to visit and I had promised to take them to a movie. Nothing else was appropriate so I asked if they wanted to see Toy Story. If they hadn't visited I probably would have never seen the movie.

I am so happy that happened as I would have missed out on how great that film was. I feel NOW the story is over but I am glad Woody got one final hurrah.

I didn't know she was behind Toy Story 4 but I knew she was a great writer and that was a very interesting approach to following an incredible trilogy. Her Black Mirror episode Nosedive was also fantastic.

Jones left the Toy Story 4 due to feeling that Pixar is "a culture where women and people of color do not have an equal creative voice."

Of course she's worried about messing it up, who wouldn't be? The great thing is she's surrounded by these professionals that are, as she said "relentless" about making it right. If I was going to be anywhere and screwed something up, I would choose there, because there's a great team that's not afraid to say no.
